Walter--both embodiments--arrived in Purgatorium, but quickly went their separate ways. Little Walter immediately set off in search of his "mother," room 302, and was confused by the total absence of South Ashfield or any way of getting there. Eventually Eve caught his attention, who quickly swayed him into believing that she was, in fact, his mother--albeit in a different form than what he knew. In the meantime, the adult Walter found himself similarly disadvantaged by the sudden absence of the world he knew. He had been pulled out of his own private universe and into one without ghosts, without the tools he needed for his rituals, and without the individuals whom he had designated Sacraments. It was a world in which he had no power whatsoever, and although comforted by the presence of the 20th Sacrament, Eileen Galvin, he could do nothing with her if all his work had been undone.

Not a terribly creative being by nature, Walter decided to restart the entire Descent of the Holy Mother ritual. Unfortunately, having virtually none of the tools needed to accomplish that, he is currently left immobilized. But, as any good program will do when faced with an unassailable obstacle, he began to adapt beyond his original set of directives. Recognizing relationships with others to be fundamental to his success, Walter began to attempt friendliness with various denizens of Purgatorium (attempt being the operative word here). In particular, he settled into what actually seemed to be a real job upon giving Lisa some indication of his (shady) experience with surgery, and developed a peculiar and fairly sudden concern for Claire's safety.

Suddenly, with the advent of Purgatorium's Voice, Neffe, Walter's focus shifted entirely. Walter became enamoured with the Voice and its apparent omniscience, believing that his beloved Mother had finally manifested in this world. His wish to be united with Her appeared to have been granted when he received a mysterious letter that beckoned him to come to Her at a given time. After trying to bring along little Walter and failing, with little Walter fleeing as the appointed time drew nearer, Walter chose to go alone instead. He welcomed the great blackness before him... but before long, he was back in this world, naked, alone, rejected by his Mother. Clearly, he thought, his feeling was true: it was little Walter who was meant to reunite with Her, not him. He was only a means to an end; his own salvation lay with his child self. His next objective was already clear.

But it didn't last. His child self was elusive, and somewhere in the time it took Walter to find him, he lost his way. Neffe touched something inside Walter that shouldn't by all rights exist--a sense of selfishness, an awakening of his own desire for happiness. The child was momentarily forgotten as Neffe's words and power manipulated Walter's love into unflagging loyalty. Believing he would help his Mother take and redeem the entire world, he happily drowned Rinoa Heartilly in order for Neffe to use her body to reclaim his full strength. This allowed Neffe to rise to the Palace of the Gods, with Walter in tow as his loyal guard dog stalking the halls for intruders. When Neffe murdered Medea and Asclepius and was subsequently killed by chaos, a great calamity descended on Purgatorium from Heaven, followed by silence. Walter's current whereabouts are unknown.
